Did you know Kindergarten teachers typically have a set of developmental milestones or skills they hope children have before entering their classroom?
These can include basic abilities like recognizing letters and numbers, understanding simple instructions, social skills such as sharing and taking turns, and fine motor skills like holding a pencil or using scissors. By having these foundational skills in place, children can better engage with the kindergarten curriculum and have a smoother transition into formal schooling.
What is expected?
Social / Emotional Skills
1. Children need to get along with others, by being kind and know how to share
2. Children need to be able to take direction from others in authority over them. Understanding that “no, mean no”
3. Children are able to regulate their emotions. That means no temper tantrums, no explosive outbursts, no crying or pouting when they don’t get their own way
Life Skills
1. Children need to be independent in the bathroom
2. Children need to be able to put on and take off their own outside wear (with buttons, or zippers) independently
3. Children need to be able to put on, take off, do up or undo their own shoes
4. Children need to be able to keep themselves and their areas neat and tidy
5. Children need to be able to recite a parent’s number, know their parent’s names, and their permanent physical address.
6. Children need to know the difference between inside and outside behaviours and voice
Academic Skills
1. Children need to be able to count to 100
2. Children need to be able to recite the alphabet
3. Children need to know the difference between letters and numbers
4. Children need to be able to recognize and print their name
5. Children need to handle books properly
6. Use scissors properly
7. Knows how to sit quietly and participate in ‘circle times’
Guess what parents! There are things on this list you can do to help your child. Things like helping your children learn independence in the bathroom, and dressing for going outside. And parents can help their child know (parent) names and recite a phone number, and their street address. This is important for emergencies.
So How Can Wee Beginnings Nursery School Help Your Child Prepare For Kindergarten?
Introducing our newest Summer Program!!
Kindergarten Prep. Program
It’s only for those going to kindergarten in the fall
Wee Beginnings Nursery School will assist children in preparing for their upcoming formal school year.
We will help children know and understand each of the criteria above through our daily routines and activities.
1. We will have ‘circle times’, where we will learn how to sit in circle without bothering others. Here we will learn how to handle books, and participate in a group.
2. We will have learning times, where we will learn how to hold a pencil, use scissors and how to use glue appropriately. We will also work on our letters and numbers, our printing our name and being neat and tidy.
3. We will have outside time, where children will learn how to transition smoothly from one activity to another with ease, and practise being independent. This will also allow children the freedom to be loud and active, learning proper inside and outside behaviours.
4. We will learn and practise our social and emotional skills while being part of a classroom group.
See your child there.
